ANNABEL LEE
Edgar Allan Poe
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;--
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love--
I and my Annabel Lee--
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud by night
Chilling my Annabel Lee;
So that her high-born kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me:--
Yes! that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of a cloud, chilling
And killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we--
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in Heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:--
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
In her sepulcher there by the sea--
In her tomb by the side of the sea.
Today, I’ll share a poem with you! Its title is “Annabel lee”
First, I’ll introduce the background of the poem for you. It’s about love and death. The story is beautiful and blue. This poem’s author is Edgar Allan Poe, born 19th of January 1809. He was mostly known for his poems,short tales and his literary criticism. He has been given credit for inventing the detective story. And his psychological thrillers have been influences for many writers worldwide. Edgar was orphaned before Edgar's third birthday. Later he moved to live with his aunt and his first cousin Virginia. In 1835, He married his cousin Virginia, a girl only thirteen years old. In January 1847 Virginia died and Edgar took this very hard but he kept on writing until the day he died in October 7, 1849.
Clearly sensing that "Annabel Lee" would be his last poem, it was first printed in the New-York Daily on October 9, 1849, only two days after the poet's death. Although at least four of Poe's women friends claimed to have inspired "Annabel Lee," the poet's real motivation may be a reflection of his continued mourning for his wife, Virginia, who died two years earlier.
I learned this poem when I was still in 2nd year of college. But I still remember the wordings of this poem because it‘s really beautiful, meaningful and bittersweet. I love the way he expresses himself with all that love for Annabel Lee.I love how he can intertwine romance and tragedy so well. I got very sentimental when I read this poem because it is sad to lose the "love of your life” Whenever I read the piece, I felt such a sense of sadness. Even more than 150 years or so after the poem was written. I've lost track of how many times I've seen the last line of "Annabelle Lee"...In her tomb by the side of the sea...
